BEHEMOTH as Inspiration

Giant SLOTH draws from Steven K. Roberts’ BEHEMOTH (1989–1992), a human-powered mobile lab that fused sensing, communication, computation.

Giant SLOTH draws from Steven K. Roberts’ Winnebiko, Winnebiko II, and BEHEMOTH projects, developed between 1983 and 1992. These bicycles are human-powered mobile laboratories that integrate sensing, communication, and computation. BEHEMOTH (Big Electronic Human-Energized Machine… Only Too Heavy) pursued total connectivity and system integration while remaining somehow legible as a bicycle in motion through public space.

BEHEMOTH reimagined how technology could be used to communicate in motion, linking locomotion, communication, and self-reportage into a continuous, embodied practice. Steven K. Roberts is a wonder.
